SC will transfer all petitions against demonetisation to a single court
The Bench said the cooperative banks may file their pleas in their respective high courts.
The Supreme Court Wednesday agreed to transfer all pending demonetisation cases to a single court, while rejecting the government’s plea to stay the petitions filed in courts across the country against the Centre’s decision to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The Bench said that the cooperative banks, who have been protesting against being disallowed from exchanging notes, may file their pleas in their respective high courts, reported The Hindu. The next date of hearing is December 2.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the Supreme Court that more than Rs 6 lakh crore has been deposited in banks around the country since the demonetisation was announced on November 8. He also claimed that more people are moving towards a digital economy, according to The Hindu. Earlier on November 18, the apex court had asked Rohatgi to file a petition and request for transfer of all such cases to Delhi.
During the previous hearing, Rohatgi had requested a blanket order to stay proceedings in PILs filed in various courts across the country. However, the top court had said that the sheer number of pleas indicated that the problem was a serious one. “People have become frantic, people are affected...There may be riots,” the bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice Anil R Dave had observed.
