After a delay in the monsoon, Chennai will soon see rain because of a depression over the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, reported PTI. The depression is expected to reach the coast over the next 24 hours, after which the north-east monsoon will also pick up.

Strong winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on December 1 and 2, the Regional Meteorological Centre has said. Heavy rain has been predicted for Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Thursday, reported The Hindu Businessline. The India Meteorological Department has also advised fishermen against venturing into the sea starting Wednesday.

“The night temperature will increase by one or two degrees due to formation of clouds that trap radiation escaping from the earth surface,” Area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran told The Times of India.

The north-east monsoon usually manages to record about 48% rainfall in Tamil Nadu in November and December. However, the state has not seen any rains in November as of now. November is likely to be one of the driest months the state has had in the past few decades, skymetweather.com said.

In December 2015, four districts in Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Cuddalore, Tiruvallore and Kancheepuram – were flooded after heavy rainfall. At least 450 people died in the rains.
