Delhi Police files FIR after Congress and Rahul Gandhi's Twitter accounts are hacked
A series of explicit tweets were posted from the party vice president’s verified profile on Wednesday night and again on Thursday morning.
The Delhi Police on Thursday registered an FIR in a case regarding the hacking of the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi’s official Twitter accounts. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung was briefed by Delhi Police over the hacking incident and the Ministry of Information Technology has asked Twitter to submit activity details of Rahul Gandhi’s account in the last six days. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has even started an investigation into the case, reported PTI.
The Congress party’s official Twitter account was hacked on Thursday morning, minutes after news reports emerged that the party had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police’s cyber cell regarding Rahul Gandhi’s profile on the micro-blogging site being breached. The “innocent hackers” threatened to make public a “full dump” of Congress emails, while saying they do not have a political agenda.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “It is quite clear that BJP has resources behind it which is not just university students having fun.”
On Wednesday, a series of explicit tweets were posted from the Congress vice president’s account. Most of the tweets, which were deleted soon after they went up, involved seeming declarations about the Congress leader’s sexuality, though others took potshots at the Gandhi family’s political legacy. Party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Such lowly tactics will never drown the sane voice of reason nor deter Rahul Gandhi from raising people’s issues.”
The Opposition party had decided to bring up the online security breach in both the Houses of Parliament. Gandhi said the hackings were a “huge question mark on digital security” in India.
