Satara: Dalit locality attacked after murder of 21-year-old Maratha girl
Police said 36 people have been arrested in the case.
A Dalit locality was attacked in Maharashtra’s Satara district on Wednesday night following the murder of a girl belonging to the Maratha community, reported PTI. The police arrested as many as 36 people in the incident.
On November 30, Siddharth Dhanane had allegedly murdered 21-year-old Aruna Mohite after she was forcibly married off to another man by her parents, reported PTI. Dhanane and Mohite were said to have been in a relationship before she got married. Dhanane is reportedly Dalit.
According to the report, Dhanane confessed to killing the woman, after which he buried her body to hide evidence of the crime.
On Wednesday night, an angry mob consisting of several members of the Maratha community attacked the homes of Dalits in the outskirts of Korale Khurd village and torched their vehicles. A meeting between the leaders of both the communities was arranged after the incident, police told PTI.
In July, the gangrape and murder of a 14-year-old Maratha girl in Kopardi village, sparked state-wide agitations. Three accused who were arrested in the case were from the Dalit community.
