Three students of Delhi’s St. Stephen’s drown in Periyar river during college trip to Kerala
The manager of their resort also died while trying to save them.
Three students of Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College drowned in the the Periyar river in Paniyeli Poru, Kerala on Friday. The manager of the resort at which they were staying also drowned while trying to save them. The resort belongs to the father of one of their classmates, and the students had gone there as part of seven-day trip with 10 others from the college.
The four deceased were identified by the police as Anubhav Chandra, Aditya Patel and Kennet Jose, and Benny Abraham, the resort’s manager. The police claimed the spot they had ventured out to was known to be dangerous and had signboards asking visitors to not enter the water. Initial reports claimed that one of the students had slipped into the water and the other three had gone in afterwards to rescue him.
The students were part of the college’s Malayalam Literature Society, which undertakes trips to Kerala every year. The principal of St. Stephen’s College John Varghese told The Indian Express that the students had gone to the resort on their own earlier in the day, though the trip to the state had been organised by the college. A condolence meeting will be held on Saturday, Varghese added. “We are trying to help out the parents in any way we can.”
