Yemen: Islamic State suicide bombing kills 49 soldiers, injures several others in Aden
Officials said an explosive device was triggered while the troops were queuing up to collect their salary slips.
The Islamic State on Sunday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed at least 49 soldiers and left several others injured at a Yemeni military base in Aden, Al Jazeera reported. The incident comes a week after an attack on December 10 that claimed the lives of 48 Yemeni security personnel and injured several others, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Officials said the suicide bomber triggered an explosive device while the soldiers were queuing up to collect their salary slips, AFP reported. The city has been targeted several times during the past few months.
President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s government, backed by an Arab coalition, has been fighting Houthi insurgents for more than 20 months. The rebels control the capital San’a, while Hadi’s forces are stationed in Aden. The Islamic State group has repeatedly targeted both forces.
A United Nations report said at least 10,000 people have died during the 20-month conflict, which has triggered a humanitarian crisis.
