Earthquake of magnitude 5.9 strikes off Andaman and Nicobar coast
The relatively low-intensity quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.
An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday morning. The epicentre was in the Nicobar islands region at a depth of 10 km, according to the government’s National Centre for Seismology.
The relatively low-intensity quake did not trigger a tsunami warning in the archipelago. There have been no reports of casualties or loss of property, so far. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck 231 km southwest of Mohean in the Nicobar islands.
Earlier on Tuesday, an earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale hit Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua at dawn.
