Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Raj Babbar on Wednesday offered to resign after the party performed badly in the Assembly elections. “Our national president gave us so much time and even after that we were not able to bring good results,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Babbar said as the state president of the Congress, he believes that the loss is his responsibility. “Those who are responsible should resign,” he added.

Stating that the party’s national leaders had worked hard, Babbar said the blame for the party’s loss in the elections should not be put on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. “The leadership only creates teams of people like us and these teams are responsible for election wins and losses,” he told NDTV.

Gandhi on Tuesday had described the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections results as “a little down” for his party. “In opposition, you have ups and downs. We had a little down in UP, we accept it,” he had said.

Babbar had been appointed the party’s state chief in July last year ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. The Congress managed to win only seven seats out of the 105-member Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won 317 seats.
