US: Democratic Congressman calls for Donald Trump’s impeachment
Al Green said democracy in the country was at risk, referring to the controversy around the firing of FBI director James Comey and the alleged Russia links.
A member of the United States House of Representatives, Al Green, on Wednesday called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump for “obstruction of justice. Green had tweeted that he would make such a move earlier in the day.
“I do not do this for political purposes,” Green, a Democrat, said. “I do this because I believe in the great ideals this country stands for – liberty and justice for all. I do it because there is a belief in this country that no one is above the law, and that includes the president of the United States of America.”
Referring to the rapidly snowballing controversy around the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, Green said the country’s democracy was at risk. “I am talking about a president who fired the FBI director [James Comey] for who was investigating the president for his connections to Russian involvement in the president’s election.”
The White House has descended into chaos over the past week. First, Trump fired Comey. He then invited top Russian diplomats into the Oval Office the following day. Soon after, he was accused of leaking top secret intelligence to the Russians, a charge the White House later denied. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday even offered to provide a transcript of the conversation between Trump and the Russian ambassador to prove that no such leak took place.
