South Goa: One dead, 30 missing as Portuguese-era bridge collapses in Curchorem village
The Navy was called in to aid the search-and-rescue operation.
One person died and 30 were reported to be missing after a bridge collapsed in Goa on Thursday evening. The dilapidated bridge, said to date back to the Portuguese era, spanned the Sanvordem river in Curchorem village in South Goa, PTI reported.
The bridge was reported to have collapsed while personnel of the state Fire and Emergency Services were trying to rescue a youngster who had jumped into the river in an apparent suicide bid, NDTV reported. The Navy has been called in to find those missing.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he had spoken to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and was tracking the rescue efforts.
The Navy said nine divers were taking part in the search and rescue operation.
