A Delhi Metro train was evacuated at the Rajiv Chowk Station on Wednesday after smoke emerged from one of the air-conditioning vents in its last coach. The incident took place around 10.20 am, when the Samaypur Badli-bound train was entering Rajiv Chowk station, PTI reported. The train was evacuated at the station itself and there were no injuries. However, services on the Yellow Line were affected.

The sparks triggered smoke and a minor explosion-like noise in the last coach, which caused commuters to panic. “As a precautionary measure, the train was evacuated at the station itself and passengers were accommodated in the next train,” a Delhi Metro official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The official added that the train had been sent to the depot for examination and normal services had been resumed. Eye-witnesses said sparks first appeared when the train entered the Central Secretariat station and re-appeared when the train was on its way to Rajiv Chowk from Patel Chowk.

Many commuters took to Twitter immediately after the incident. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is, however, absent from social media.

This incident is not an isolated one. Last December, a Delhi Metro train had to be evacuated at the Patel Chowk station after sparks in the air-conditioning system immersed a whole coach in thick plumes of smoke.
