The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex on Tuesday shed gains made in the morning session, to close almost flat on Tuesday. When markets closed, the Sensex was just 7.79 points up from its previous day’s close at 31,103.49. The National Stock Exchange Nifty also lost the gains it had made in early trade, to finish 9.50 points down from Monday’s close at 9,606.90.

Taking cues from the retail inflation and industrial output data that were released on Monday after market hours, the Sensex had traded higher by 165 points in the afternoon session, and the Nifty by 38 points during the day.

The top gainer on the Sensex when markets closed was Lupin. The pharmaceutical giant, which had traded in red for the past two days, gained 1.73% to close at 1,177.40 on Tuesday. The other companies which were among the five highest gainers were HDFC, NTPC, Adani Ports and Sun Pharma. The top five losers on the BSE on Tuesday were Tata Motors, TCS, Wipro, Hero Motocorp and Mahindra and Mahindra.

On the NSE, the top gainer on Tuesday was Power Grid Corporation of India, followed by Lupin, NTPC, Bosch Ltd and HDFC. The top five losers for the day were Vedanta Ltd, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors (DVR), Tata Motors and Wipro. Wipro shares fell for the second consecutive day, losing 1.65% on the NSE to finish at Rs 258.85 per share.

The rupee, which had opened at 64.43 to the dollar on Tuesday, was trading down at 64.49 to the dollar at 4:27 pm.
