Arunachal Pradesh: EC cancels bye-election to Pakke-Kessang Assembly seat because of bad weather
The constituency had fallen vacant after then MLA Kameng Dolo had lost his House membership following a Supreme Court ruling.
The Election Commission on Wednesday cancelled the bye-election to the Pakke-Kessang Assembly constituency in Arunachal Pradesh, taking into consideration the current weather conditions in the state, ANI reported.
The election was scheduled for July 29.
The Pakke-Kessang seat had fallen vacant after former deputy chief minister and the then sitting MLA Kameng Dolo lost his Assembly membership following a Supreme Court ruling, reported PTI. While the Bharatiya Janata Party had named its local unit General Secretary BR Wahge its candidate for the polls, the Congress and the People’s Party of Arunachal havge yet to field a candidate.
The state has been witnessing torrential rainfall over the past week. A landslide in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district on Tuesday killed at least 14 people, and many were trapped under the debris. A number of other landslides caused by heavy rains occurred in the state on Tuesday.
Water in all the major rivers that flow through Arunachal Pradesh, including the Barapani, Senki View and Chandranagar rivers, were above the danger level on Tuesday. Officials said 15 granaries and several houses had been inundated by the Yomgo river.
The weather department has predicted more rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days.
