The Supreme Court on Thursday closed the contempt case against former Board of Control for Cricket in India President Anurag Thakur after he submitted an “unconditional and unequivocal” apology to the bench, reported PTI. In his apology, the defendant said he had never intended to undermine the top court’s majesty.

On July 7, the apex court had rejected his apology and asked him to file a fresh affidavit by July 12. Thakur had offered his first apology to the court on March 5.

The former BCCI chief is scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court in person on Friday in connection with the perjury case against him. The bench had pulled him up for allegedly lying under oath and trying to obstruct its judgment in the case releted to Justice Lodha panel’s recommendations being implemented.

Thakur could face time in jail if found guilty of perjury charges.
