A major fire broke out in King George Medical University’s Trauma Centre in Lucknow on Saturday evening, The Indian Express reported. The fire was first noticed at around 7 pm on the second floor, in the disaster management ward, which houses medical personnel, said The Times of India. There were no casualties.

Witnesses said the fire alarm did not work, and hospital authorities detected the blaze only after it had filled the second and third floors of the six-story building. Eight fire tenders and a team of 40 fire fighters brought the flames under control after more than two hours. “The whole ward was filled with smoke. It took us some time to reach the spot and then start extinguishing the fire,” said Lucknow Chief Fire Officer AB Pandey.

150 patients were shifted to various hospitals such as Shatabdi, Lari Cardiology Centre and Bal Chikitsalaya. No patient was injured, said KGMU Hospital Chief Medical Superintendent SN Sankhwar.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath has directed the Lucknow divisional commissioner to conduct an investigation and submit a report within three days.
