Eight people were killed and eight others injured after a residential building collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar locality on Tuesday, reported ANI. Many people are believed to be trapped in the debris, though reports mention conflicting figures.
So far, 12 people have been rescued and taken to a hospital, reported the Hindustan Times. Fourteen fire engines, one rescue van and an ambulance were pressed into service for rescue operation. “Our rescue team, fire brigade troops and other senior civic officials have also reached the spot,” said PS Rahangdale, chief of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s fire department, according to NDTV. “Rescue work is on.”
Two wings of the four-storey Saidarshan Apartment collapsed around 10.45 am, municipal officials said. The nursing home on the building’s ground floor did not have many patients as the place was being renovated.
Local residents alleged that the building collapsed because of the renovation work at the nursing home owned by Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap. However, BMC officials are yet to ascertain the reason. Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar told ANI that he has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
