At least four gunmen attacked the Iraqi embassy and a police headquarters in Kabul on Monday, ToloNews reported quoting Afghanistan’s interior ministry. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“No embassy staff members were hurt in the attack. The security forces rescued the ambassador, deputy ambassador and other staff and took them to a safe place,” the Ministry of Interior said in a statement. It added that one policemen was injured.

A suicide bomber first detonated explosives near the entrance of the embassy, and then three other insurgents entered the compound, the ministry said. The attack started around 11.10 am local time (12.10 pm Indian Standard Time) and ended around 3 pm local time (4 pm IST).

The Iraqi foreign ministry said that its top diplomat in Kabul had been evacuated safely, to the Egyptian embassy, but that attempts were on to remove two other officials, the BBC reported. The Iraqi foreign ministry claimed that two Afghan guards at the entrance to the embassy had died in the attack.

ToloNews quoted a source saying that the militants were wearing police uniforms when they launched the attack.
