Indian benchmark indices closed higher on Monday, tracking positive Asian cues. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex rose 194.64 points to 31,882.16 and the National Stock Exchange Nifty crossed the 10,000 mark to end 71.25 points higher at 10,006.05 points.

Lupin, Asian Paints, Tata Motors DVR, Maruti Suzuki and BHEL were the best performers on the Sensex. On the Nifty, IndusInd Bank, Tata Power, Larsen & Toubro, GAIL and Yes Bank were the top five gainers.

The worst performers on the Sensex were Mahindra & Mahindra, Infosys, Sun Pharma, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank. On the Nifty, shares of Mahindra & Mahindra, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Sun Pharma, TCS and Infosys dropped the most.

All Asian markets, except the Taiwan TSEC 50 Index, gained on Monday. Analysts attributed the positive sentiment to North Korea belying global expectations of another nuclear test on Saturday. The Hong Kong Hang Seng rose by 286 points, Japan’s Nikkei 225 by nearly 271 points, and the Shanghai SE Composite Index by over 11 points.

The rupee was trading eight paise higher against the dollar at 64.00 at 4.17 pm.
