External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday said all Indians were safe in Mexico where a 7.1-magnitude earthquake claimed at least 225 lives. Swaraj said India stood with Mexico in this difficult time.

“My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the second earthquake in Mexico,” Swaraj said on Twitter. “I have spoken to our Ambassador in Mexico. All Indians are safe.”

Swaraj is currently in New York to attend the 72nd annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The epicentre was near Raboso town in Puebla, about 122 km southeast of Mexico City, at a depth of 51 km, the US Geological Survey said. About 2 million people in Mexico City are without electricity, and phone lines are also down.

This was the second major earthquake to hit the tremor-prone country in as many weeks. On September 7, an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 struck off the southern coast of Mexico, killing at least 90 people.
