DU Students’ Union chief gets court notice after ABVP claims he was charged for attempted murder
The petition filed by Rajat Chaudhary, who had lost the DU elections to Rocky Tuseed, accused him of hiding an FIR registered against him in 2014.
Rocky Tuseed, the newly elected president of the Delhi University Students’ Union, got a notice from the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, after a plea claimed he had an FIR against him for attempted murder.
The petition, filed by Rajat Chaudhary of rival students’ union Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, claimed that Tuseed had concealed facts, including his arrest for criminal charges, The Indian Express reported.
Chaudhary, a first-year student of Delhi University, had lost the student elections to Tuseed, who belongs to the National Students Union of India. His plea claims that Tuseed did not disclose that an FIR was registered against him in Rajouri Garden in August 2014 for attempt to commit culpable homicide, voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint. It also said that Tuseed was sent to judicial custody for over two weeks the same month, and that he was under trial.
The Delhi High Court called the allegations as “very serious”, the Hindustan Times reported. “It is concealment,” the bench said as it issued the notice.
Tuseed’s counsel argued that candidates have fought elections earlier as well despite having FIRs against them. The court will hear the matter next on November 15.
The NSUI, which is the student wing of the Congress, won the posts of president and vice president in the Delhi University Students’ Union polls on September 13. The ABVP bagged the secretary and joint secretary seats. Tuseed became the new president, defeating Chaudhary and the All India Student’s Association’s Parul Chauhan.
The DU student election results were seen as a huge blow for the ABVP, which had won all four seats in 2014 and 2015 and three in 2016. The NSUI had last won all four seats in 2007, and in 2012, it had won three seats. The student body had won only the post of joint secretary in 2016.
