A nine-year-old white tiger died on Wednesday, three days after a fight with two Royal Bengal tigers at the Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bengaluru. Park authorities told The Hindu that Shreyas, born and brought up in the park, succumbed to its injuries at 8 pm on Wednesday.

According to officials, two white tigers were attacked by the two Royal Bengal tigers after a gate between their enclosures was left open at the tiger safari. “It is basically a mishap,” C Jayaram, the Additional Chief Principal Conservator of Forests, Wildlife, told NDTV. “While closing the gates, there was a lack of coordination. The tigers entered the same enclosure and there was a fight.”

Santosh Kumar, the Executive Director of the park told The Hindu that Shreyas had started recovering after the fight. “He was even walking. Only a post-mortem can ascertain the cause of death.”

Kumar blamed the incident on inexperienced staff manning the gates. An investigation has been ordered to find out what led to the mishap.
