Bolivia: Thousands protest as President Evo Morales makes fresh attempt to retain office
In a referendum in 2016, voters had rejected Morales’ bid to run again in 2019.
Thousands of Bolivians held protest marches on Tuesday, opposing President Evo Morales’ latest effort to make it possible for him to run for a fourth term in 2019, Reuters reported.
In September, Morales’ party asked the Constitutional Court to lift limits on the number of times an elected person can run for office. The leftist Movement Towards Socialism party said such limits violated human rights.
This came despite a constitutional referendum in February 2016, in which voters rejected the proposal to reform the constitution to end such limits on term lengths. A little more than half – 51% – voters were against the proposal.
Protestors on Tuesday carried the Bolivian flag and signs reading “Bolivia said ‘no’!”
“This is a political dictatorship,” a protestor was quoted as saying.
