Trump needs another hug from Modi, Rahul Gandhi says as the US president warms up to Pakistan
The US president on Saturday said Washington was beginning to build a better relationship with Pakistan and its leaders.
A day after United States President Donald Trump dropped hints about improving ties with Pakistan, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday proposed a quick-fix solution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi: a hug.
“Modi ji quick,” Gandhi tweeted. “Looks like President Trump needs another hug.”
Modi is known to often hug world leaders when he meets them. He last visited Washington, DC on June 27 when he met Trump for a “working dinner”, where they had discussed Pakistan.
Trump had on Saturday said Washington was beginning to build a better relationship with Pakistan and its leaders. The comments came within a day of Pakistan rescuing an American-Canadian family from the Haqqani network, five years after they were abducted.
For years, Pakistan had taken tremendous advantage of the US, but America was now starting to have a “real relationship” with Islamabad, Trump said, in a slight departure from the US’ strong comments against Pakistan over the last few weeks.
In August, Trump had accused Islamabad of protecting terrorists and said Washington would “no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organisations”. Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also pointed out that Pakistan must shut its safe havens for terrorists.
