Former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday alleged that ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif had twice plotted to assassinate him in the 1990s, Dawn reported. Shahbaz Sharif is currently the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Zardari claimed that the Sharif brothers had planned to kill him once when he was going to a court for a hearing, according to PTI.

“They change colours so quickly,” he was quoted as saying. “When they are in trouble, they are ready to cooperate with you...When in absolute power, they hit you smartly.”

Zardari said Nawaz Sharif had been trying to contact him to seek support, but he emphasised that he will not join hands with the Sharif brothers for an alliance after next year’s elections.

“I have not yet forgotten what they did to Bibi Benazir [his wife and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto] and me,” Zardari told members of his Pakistan Peoples Party.
