Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit Vice President Sardar Kulwant Singh Baath has resigned after he failed to attend an event participated by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, PTI reported on Saturday. Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, however, said no decision has been taken yet on Baath’s resignation.

In his resignation letter, Baath said he stepped down because he has failed to contribute to the party’s programmes for the last few days. Baath quit on October 25, the day the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat – an affiliate of the RSS – celebrated Guru Gobind Singh’s 350th birth anniversary. Apart from Bhagwat, the event was attended several central ministers.

The BJP leader, however, told PTI that he was tied to a hukamnama, an edict of the Akal Takht, since 2004 that forbids Sikhs from attending events organised by the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat. “Unless the issue is resolved, it will be a tricky situation for me,” he told the news agency.

Baath had joined the BJP earlier this year, and was appointed as the vice president of its Delhi unit. Unidentified party officials claimed that Baath was still close to the Shiromani Akali Dal. However, Baath refuted such allegations, and said he had no plans to join the Akali dal.
