The benchmark indices began the week on a strong note, with the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex closing trade at 33,266.16 points, up 108.94 points. The National Stock Exchange’s Nifty index was up 0.39% at 10,363.65 points at closing bell.

The strong showing followed cues from Asian markets.

Earlier, the indices hit their all-time highs of 33,325.32 points and 10,381.95 points, respectively.

The Nifty PSU Bank index continued to gain after the government announced a Rs 2.11-lakh-crore plan to recapitalise public sector banks last week.

Tata Motors DVR, Lupin, Bharti Infratel and Yes Bank gained the most on both indices.

On Nifty 50, the top five gainers were Yes Bank, Lupin Ltd, Bharti Infratel, Eicher Motors Ltd and Tata Motors. The stocks that lost the most were HCL Tech, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Wipro and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Through the day, Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar, tracking gains in local equity and Asian currencies markets. At 2 pm, it was trading at 64.91 against the dollar, but closed at Rs 65.07 a dollar.
