Eight people were killed and 11 injured on Tuesday after a man drove a truck through a crowded path in Manhattan, striking cyclists and pedestrians, The New York Times reported. New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill said the injured had “serious but non-life threatening injuries”, according to BBC.

The 29-year-old attacker was later shot at by the police, and arrested. He was identified as Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbek immigrant who came to the United States in 2010.

The incident happened shortly after 3 pm local time (after 12.30 am Wednesday IST). After mowing down people, the man smashed into a school bus, stopped and came out holding two handguns and shouted a statement “consistent with a terror attack”, O’Neill said.

The governments of Belgium and Argentina have said their citizens were among the victims.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the incident a terrorist attack. Investigators found handwritten notes in Arabic near the truck, indicating allegiance to the Islamic State group, The New York Times reported, citing investigation officials.

President Donald Trump called the attacker a “very sick and deranged person”, and said the law enforcement agencies were investigating the attack.
