Lynching victim Junaid Khan’s family is asking for money, Haryana tells HC: Report
The court was hearing arguments on a petition by his father who has sought an independent investigation.
The Haryana government on Thursday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the family of Junaid Khan, who was killed by a mob in a train in June, has sought Rs 2 crore and 3 acres of land from the accused to settle the matter, The Indian Express reported. The family has denied the claim and described it as a “rumour” and an “attempt to put pressure” on them.
The court was hearing arguments on a petition by Khan’s father, asking for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation and a stay on an ongoing trial in a Faridabad court. Last week, the Faridabad court judge, YS Rathore, had accused Additional Advocate General Naveen Kaushik of assisting the counsel for the accused in the case. Kaushik resigned from the government panel of lawyers on Wednesday.
The next High Court hearing of the case is on November 7. It also allowed official witnesses to be examined in the Faridabad court on Monday, Arshdeep Singh Cheema, the family’s counsel, was quoted as saying by PTI.
Additional Advocate General Deepak Sabharwal told the court that a Deputy Superintendent of Police had told him that the family wants to delay the trial court proceedings and wants to take money to reach a compromise.
A member of the family told The Indian Express that the panchayat and people of the villages of the accused had themselves approached them asking for a compromise, but that the family turned down their proposal.
