Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on Sunday confirmed that a Kenyan man of Indian origin was shot dead during a counter-terrorism operation across his residence. Bunty Shah thought the firing from across the building was an intrusion by armed burglars and shot in the air, Swaraj tweeted.

Kenyan Police said the incident occurred on October 21. “Information obtained by the police indicated that some unidentified individuals were plotting to stage multiple attacks in Nairobi,” the police statement said.

Kenyan security forces conducting the counter terrorism operations responded to his firing by shooting in his direction. “The police have regretted the the incident,” Swaraj tweeted while adding that she had received a report on the matter from the Indian High Commission.

“Indian High Commission will provide all help and assistance to the family,” Swaraj said. “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”

Swaraj’s posts were in reply to a tweet posted by Twitter user Neha Parikh who sought help for Shah’s family and said he was associated with Bobmil Industries Limited.
