Markets end nearly flat after scaling all-time highs during the day
The top losers on both indices included Sun Pharma, NTPC and Bharti Airtel.
The benchmark indices ended on a flat note on Monday despite reaching fresh record highs during the day.
The BSE Sensex reached 33,848.42 points in the day’s trade, but ended lower at 33,731.19, about 45 points higher than Friday’s close. The Nifty 50 pared gains, too, and closed at 10,451.80 points, lower than the intra-day high of 10,490.45.
The indices suffered losses because of negative sentiment in the European and Asian markets in the later part of the day. They had earlier risen amid hopes of new positive announcements from the Goods and Services Tax Council, which is due to meet later this week.
Tata Motors, ONGC and Mahindra & Mahindra were the top gainers on both the indices. Bharti Infratel and Wipro were among the top gainers on the Nifty 50 as well.
Among the sectoral indices, the consumer durables index surged 8.6% led by Titan, which rose 19% on both indices. The top losers on both indices included Sun Pharma, NTPC and Bharti Airtel.
The rupee ended the day at 64.67 a dollar, nearly flat since opening at 64.65.
