On March 14, 2015, the men broke into a school in the town of Ranaghat, looted the church, desecrated the idols and attacked the 71-year-old nun who tried to stop them.
Islam was arrested after the nun identified him from a line-up of suspects. Investigators identified and arrested the others – Milan Kumar Sarkar, Ohidul Islam, Mohd Selim Sheikh, Khaledar Rahman and Gopal Sarkar – using CCTV footage.
