Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Padmavati, which has been criticised by right-wing and Rajput groups in the state for “distorting history”, will not be banned, News18 reported.

The sentiments of communities depicted in the movie will also be taken care of, the minister said, adding that he would speak to Bhansali.

The minister said that he would wait for a committee to look into the allegations of historical distortions before making any comments, ANI reported. “No one should take law and order into their hands,” he added.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking a stay on the release of the film for allegedly hurting sentiments of the Rajput community. “The trailer of the film shows Rani Padmavati doing a Ghoomar dance,” the petition alleged, according to The Times of India. “The Queens never used to do Ghoomar...and the revelation of skin by actress Deepika Padukone, in her portrayal of Padmavati, has hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community.”

On Thursday, Central Board of Film Certification member Arjun Gupta called for Bhansali to be tried for treason. He said that he had written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the matter, ANI reported.

Bhansali on Wednesday released a video, addressing doubts over a dream sequence between Alauddin Khilji, played by actor Ranveer Singh, and Padmini, played by Deepika Padukone. The film, he said, was made with “a lot of honesty, responsibility and hard work”.
