A district court in Bhopal on Friday sentenced Congress spokesperson KK Mishra to a two-year jail term after finding him guilty in a defamation case filed by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan (pictured above), ANI reported. The Congress leader was also fined Rs 25,000.

Soon after the verdict, Mishra was granted bail, The Indian Express reported.

In 2014, Mishra had accused Chouhan and his wife Sadhna Singh of using their influence to get a few candidates recruited as transport inspectors, News 18 reported. He had claimed that at least 19 people from Gondia, Sadhna Singh’s native, were illegally recruited as constables in the transport department.

Chouhan then filed a defamation case against Mishra in the Bhopal district court.

After the Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed a revision petition filed by Mishra challenging the charges against him in July, the Congress leader moved the Supreme Court. But the top court also rejected Mishra’s plea to transfer the case from the district court.
