Jammu and Kashmir: Protests held against US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israeli Capital
The agitators shouted ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’ in parts of Srinagar.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front in Srinagar held protests on Friday to protest against United States President Donald Trump’s decision to formally recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, Greater Kashmir reported.
The protestors sought immediate revocation of the decision and the intervention of the international community. An effigy of US President Donald Trump was also set on fire, while the protestors shouted “Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’, Greater Kashmir reported.
Several protests were carried out in parts of Kashmir after the Friday prayers. In Srinagar, activists demonstrated in Maisuma locality in Lal Chowk, and in Hasanabad locality. A protest rally was carried out in Bandipora district’s Gurez sector.
Earlier on Friday, authorities had imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Safakfal, Nowhatta and MR Gunj police station areas of Srinagar, after separatists on Friday called for peaceful protests, PTI reported.
“The US decision to declare this sacred land [Jerusalem] as the capital of Israel, amounts to political bankruptcy of [the] fascist Trump regime,” the Joint Resistance Leadership had said in a statement on Thursday. The JRL comprises Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirqaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik.
Both Israelis and Palestinians claim the holy city as their capital. Trump’s controversial move sparked anger among Palestinians, hundreds of whom marched through Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah in a “day of rage” protests on Thursday. While Israel called the decision “historic”, several countries, as well as the United Nations, the European Union and the Vatican, criticised the move.
