A Palestinian man stabbed an Israeli security guard near the main bus station in Jerusalem on Sunday, Reuters reported. The suspected assailant, a 24-year-old man from the occupied West Bank, was taken into custody after a passerby tackled him.

The guard is reportedly in critical condition and is breathing using a respirator. “The knife, unfortunately, hit his heart,” The Times of Israel quoted an unidentified doctor as saying. “His condition has stabilised, but I cannot say that there is not threat to his life.”

Clashes broke out on Sunday between hundreds of protesters and security forces outside the United States Embassy in Beirut, Haaretz reported. They reportedly attempted to remove a roadblock near the embassy in an attempt to break in. However, street protests in the Palestinian territories over United States President Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem the Capital of Israel have largely died down.

Most countries consider East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed during the 1967 war, to be an occupied territory. Their position is that the city’s status should be decided during future talks between Israelis and Palestinians. While Israel maintains that all of Jerusalem is its Capital, Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be declared the Capital of a future state.
