Three men allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl and assaulted and robbed her friend at a park in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh on Saturday evening – exactly five years after the brutal gangrape and murder of a physiotherapy student in the capital sparked nationwide protests and brought in stricter laws, the Hindustan Times reported.

The 16-year-old reported the incident the same day and filed a complaint, but the police are yet to identify her three attackers.

The police said the girl works as a domestic help near the Haiderpur slums. “She was sitting with her male friend in a park near the slums around 6.30 pm when the men entered the park and overpowered them,” Delhi Police spokesperson Madhur Verma said, according to the Indian Express.

In her complaint, the girl said the men asked them why they were in the park that late. When her friend protested, the three men allegedly assaulted him, threw his cell phone in the nearby bushes and attacked the girl. The girl’s friend told the police he also shouted out for help, but there was no one in the park, the Hindustan Times reported.

The men threatened the couple not to report the incident, the girl told the police. She said she went home and told her parents, who then reported the crime at the Shalimar Bagh police station.

Verma said the girl’s medical examination confirmed rape. The police registered a case under the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act.
