Maruti Suzuki ties up with Delhi government to set up 12 automated driving test centres
The hi-tech tracks will have sensors and a network of cameras to assess a driver’s skill, and will do away with the need for an official in the car.
Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday said it will work with the Delhi government to develop 12 fully automated driving test centres across the city, PTI reported.
The company will invest Rs 15 crore to set up centres at Hauz Khas, Burari, Jharoda Kalan, Dwarka, Mayur Vihar, Pratap Nagar, Surajmal Vihar, Loni Border, Rohini, Raja Garden and Shakur Basti. The first centre, at Sarai Kale Khan, could be ready by January 26, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said, according to The Hindu.
The automated driving test tracks will have sensors and a network of CCTV cameras to assess drivers’ skills. The tracks will have different courses, such as up-slopes, an 8-shaped stretch, reverse driving and parking. There will be no official inside the car, instead, all the test cars will have cameras fitted in them.
The automated tracks will ensure the process of issuing driving licenses becomes more accurate, Gahlot said. Each testing track is likely to cost around Rs 1 crore, Gahlot said, according to The Times of India.
Kerala, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru have similar testing tracks, The Hindu report said.
Maruti Suzuki said it will set up the centres and maintain them for three years. The transport department will still conduct the tests and issue licenses.
