The Aligarh Muslim University has ordered an investigation after the Uttar Pradesh Police alerted them about criminals taking shelter in the university’s hostels, The Indian Express reported on Friday. A committee headed by provost of Sir Syed North Hostel has been set up to conduct the inquiry.

The police wrote a letter to the university proctor after it arrested four robbers who had allegedly confessed to hiding in two rooms of the hostel after carrying out crimes in nearby areas. Investigators said they had recovered stolen goods and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash from the arrested men, who said the remaining stolen goods are kept in the hostel, The Times of India reported.

“We have asked the university authorities to find out how these robbers got entry into hostels and those who were helping them,” Aligarh Superintendent of Police, North, Atul Srivastava told The Indian Express.

The AMU’s constitution bars the police from entering the campus without prior permission from the vice chancellor, according to The Telegraph. Srivastava said criminals were taking advantage of this rule.

AMU Vice Chancellor Tarqi Mansoor told The Times of India that authorities have been asked to check hostels and make sure that outsiders were evicted. Regular inspections will be conducted in all hostels, he added.

“The staff deputed at the entrances of various university halls has been directed to be more watchful while checking identities of students staying in hostels,” a statement issued by Mansoor said. “The university has also asked the authorities of halls to affix allotment slips and photographs of students on the doors of rooms.”
