The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday told Parliament that 31 entrepreneurs, who are under the Central Bureau of Investigation’s scanner, have fled the country, PTI reported. The listed fugitives include businessmen Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Jatin Mehta.

Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar announced the names while replying to a query in the Lok Sabha. The Central Bureau of Investigation has made extradition requests for Mallya, Ashish Jobanputra, Pushpesh Kumar Baid, Sanjay Kalra, Varsha Kalra and Aarti Kalra, Akbar said. The Enforcement Directorate is also investigating 12 of the 31 fugitives, the minister of state said.

Akbar said the United Kingdom had declined India’s extradition requests for several of the fugitive entrepreneurs, including Raymond Andrew Varley, Ravi Shankaran, Ajay Prasad Khaitan, Anand Kumar Jain and JK Angurala. “The United Kingdom court has also declined [India’s request] to issue arrest warrants for Rishikesh Surendra Kardile, Patrick Charles Bowering and Kartik Venugopal, on the ground of insufficient evidence of extradition offence,” Akbar said.
