A social activist and Right to Information campaigner from Meghalaya was found murdered in Khliehriat area on Tuesday, the Hindustan Times reported. The body of Poipynhun Majaw, the president of the Jaintia Youth Federation, was found near a bridge in Khliehriat, the district headquarters of the East Jaintia Hills.

“A wrench was found next to the body, and preliminary inquiry suggests that the victim was hit on the head leading to his death,” Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) AR Mawthoh said. The inspector said that the motive for Majaw’s murder has not been ascertained.

Majaw had recently filed a Right to Information application seeking details about the alleged misappropriation of public funds in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. He had also claimed that cement companies in Jaintia Hills were mining without permission from the council.

Agnes Kharshiing, an RTI activist and president of the Civil Society Women’s Organisation, condemned the murder, The Northeast Today reported. “We strongly condemn his killing and demand immediate arrests of those responsible,” she said.
