Security forces killed four suspected militants in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara town on Tuesday, the Indian Army said. The encounter is still under way in Kupwara’s Arampura-Halmatpura area.

Senior Superintendent of Kupwara Police Shamsher Hussian told Greater Kashmir that he could not confirm the deaths as they had not retrieved any bodies yet.

The militants attacked the security forces while they were carrying out a cordon and search operation in Kupwara, the Hindustan Times reported.

“The terrorists opened fire on an Army patrol party in the Arampura-Halmatpura area in Kupwara,” Defence Spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said, according to The Times of India. “The encounter started at around 3 pm and is still under way.”
