Myanmar President Htin Kyaw, Aung San Suu Kyi’s close friend, resigns
He said he was retiring from his duties because he wanted to ‘take rest’.
Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw resigned on Wednesday, two years after taking charge. Htin Kyaw is a close friend of the country’s de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and was the country’s first president in over 50 years to have no ties to the Army.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Htin Kyaw said he was retiring from his duties because he wanted to “take rest”. The notice said his post will be filled within seven working days.
Htin Kyaw became the president of Myanmar in March 2016 after Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won the election. Suu Kyi was made the state counsellor, a title created for her since she is constitutionally banned from presidency as the provision requires the president, their spouse and children to hold Myanmar nationalities. Suu Kyi’s sons and late husband are British citizens.
