The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the police to release by 5 pm actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui, who was arrested on March 16 for allegedly obtaining the call records of the actor’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui, The Indian Express reported. The court issued the order after the prosecution withdrew its objection to his release.

In January, the Thane Police arrested three private detectives, one of whom was believed to have helped Rizwan Siddiqui get hold of the records. They had arrested eleven suspects, including well-known private detective Rajani Pandit, for allegedly procuring call detail records illegally and selling them.

Investigators had summoned Nawazuddin Siddiqui, his wife and Rizwan Siddiqui on March 10 for questioning. The police had then said the lawyer may have sought the records because of some dispute between the couple.

The lawyer’s wife Tasneem Siddiqui had moved the Bombay High Court, claiming that her husband had been wrongfully arrested without a notice. This was an absolute violation of the Criminal Procedure Code’s provisions, she had argued in her petition. However, Assistant Public Prosecutor JP Yagnik told the court on Tuesday that Rizwan Siddiqui had refused to accept the notice.

Meanwhile, the police on Tuesday alleged that Ayesha Shroff, actor Jackie Shroff’s wife, and actor Kangana Ranaut knew Rizwan Siddiqui and were involved in the call record scam, The Times of India reported. “During analysis of mobile phones of [Rizwan] Siddiqui, it came to light that Ayesha had sourced the CDRs [call detail records] of actor Sahil Khan from a source,” said Abhishek Trimukhe, the deputy commissioner of Thane Police’s Crime Branch.

The police said they have evidence that Ranaut had shared the phone number of actor Hrithik Roshan with the lawyer. “We have written to nodal officers of mobile operators for further details,” Trimukhe added.

The police summoned Ayesha Shroff for questioning on Wednesday and said the others will be summoned soon.
