The Congress on Friday moved a no-confidence motion against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Lok Sabha Secretary General Snehlata Shrivastava, to include the no-confidence motion in the Lower House’s list of business for March 27.

YSR Congress Party’s YV Subba Reddy also wrote to the secretary general, to add the party’s no-confidence motion to the March 27 list.

The Telugu Desam Party was the first to move a no-confidence motion against the government after it refused the demand to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh. The party did so on March 16, after breaking away from the National Democratic Alliance and having two of its members resign from the Union Cabinet.

The YSR Congress followed suit soon after. But neither motion was taken up for discussion as the Lok Sabha has been repeatedly adjourned amid protests by Opposition parties. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned again on Friday. The Lok Sabha will now reconvene only on Tuesday; it will not sit on Monday on account of Ram Navami.

Besides the Telugu Desam Party’s demand for special category status for Andhra Pradesh, MPs have been making other demands in Parliament – the Congress wants a discussion on the killing of 39 Indians in Iraq, and MPs of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam want the government to set up a Cauvery Management Board.
