French Police on Friday shot down a gunman after he opened fire on police in Trèbes before holding people hostage in a supermarket and killing two people, Reuters reported. Prosecutors said the gunman had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group, AFP reported.

Several people sustained injuries during the attack. Yves Lefebvre, secretary general of SGP Police-FO police union, said the man first fired at police officers near the city of Carcassonne, AP reported. He said one police officer sustained a minor shoulder injury.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe described the Trèbes incident as a “serious situation”. He said all information suggested that it was a “terrorist attack”.
