IndiGo ground operations staff go on strike at Varanasi airport over salary problems
The airline said its payments were ‘up to date’ and that it was looking into the concerns of the 56 employees.
Fifty-six employees of IndiGo’s ground handling services began a strike in Varanasi on Wednesday morning over problems related to payments and salaries. The director of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Anil Kumar Rai, said the strike had caused “minor difficulties in dealing with IndiGo passengers”, but services at the airport were not disrupted, PTI reported.
Staff of IndiGo’s GV India Services, which handles its ground operations, held a meeting with the airline’s management after they began their protest. Rai said he hoped they had agreed to resume their services.
“IndiGo follows a regular payment cycle for its ground handling agents, and our payments have remained compliant and up to date throughout the duration of our operations at Varanasi,” the company said. “We are actively looking into a solution for the concerns raised by the staff of our ground handling agency, GV India Services, at the Varanasi airport.”
The airport director said the employees on strike will be asked to clarify why they had not given the mandatory seven-day notice before beginning their strike. He warned that they could face legal action if they did not get back to work at the earliest.
