The Mumbai Police arrested a 42-year-old fashion designer for allegedly sexually assaulting his two daughters for over two years, PTI reported on Wednesday.

The assault came to light after the elder daughter, aged 17, told her mother about it on Sunday. “When she asked her husband, he allegedly abused her too,” senior inspector Kailashchand Avhad told PTI. “She then took both the girls to Vakola police station and filed a complaint.”

The police arrested the designer on Monday after which a special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act court remanded him in police custody till April 13.

The police said the daughter confided in her mother after their father threatened to cut off money for her education, The Times of India reported. The girl told the police she did not exactly remember when the abuse began, and that till November her father would only target her. But after that, he started assaulting her younger sister too.

The girl said she has three siblings — two sisters aged 13 and 10, and a three-year-old brother. She said her father’s parents also lived in the house, but the abuse went unnoticed because her mother is unwell and confined to the ground floor of the house. The girl said her father threatened to kill her brother if she told anyone about the abuse.
