A Lucknow court on Saturday sent Bharatiya Janata Party’s Uttar Pradesh MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar to seven days in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation, ANI reported. Sengar is accused of raping a teenager in Unnao district in June 2017.

Sengar had told the media after appearing in court earlier on Saturday that he had “full faith in the judiciary”.

The CBI had on Friday arrested Sengar. He was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code on Thursday.

The Uttar Pradesh government had asked the CBI to take over the inquiry into the alleged rape of the girl and the death of her father in judicial custody. The agency had detained the BJP MLA for questioning late on Thursday.

Earlier on Friday, the Allahabad High Court had told the CBI to arrest, not just detain, Sengar. The CBI then visited the girl’s home for questioning and also questioned the doctors who had treated her at Unnao District Hospital.

Second arrest in case

The investigating agency also arrested a woman named Shashi Singh in connection with the case on Saturday, PTI reported. Singh allegedly took the teenager to MLA Kuldeep Singh’s house in July 2017, on the day when he first raped her.

The teenager’s mother has claimed in her complaint that the woman lured her daughter to the MLA’s house and stood guard outside the room when he raped the girl.
