The Central Board of Secondary Education told the Delhi High Court on Friday that it had decided against conducting a re-examination for the Class 10 mathematics exam afresh over a question paper leak after conducting a “trend analysis” of other question papers, PTI reported.

The board said it could not put all students in difficulty just because one of them had filed a plea seeking a re-test.

On Monday, the High Court had dismissed a petition seeking directions to the CBSE to reschedule the Class 12 economics re-test, which was also necessitated by a paper leak. However, the court had asked the board to submit the records related to its decision on the Class 10 mathematics exam.

On March 28, the board had said both papers had been leaked. But while it would conduct the Class 12 economics exam again on April 25, it said it had decided not to re-conduct the Class 10 mathematics paper as the leak had had little impact on the results.

The bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar will hear the case next on July 23. The bench wanted to know why the student wanted a re-test and asked her to appear in court.

Two marks for all Class 10 students

Meanwhile, the CBSE on Thursday announced that it would award two marks to all Class 10 students because of errors in the English question paper, PTI reported. The exam was held on March 12.

In the question paper, students were asked to find synonyms for certain words in specific paragraphs of a reading comprehension passage. However, the paragraphs where they were asked to look at were incorrectly marked, students and teachers had complained to the CBSE.

“The typing error has been noticed and it has been the board’s policy to not let students face any disadvantage,” an unidentified official from CBSE told PTI. “The marking scheme has been decided in interest of students, and all those who appeared for the particular question will be awarded two marks.”
