Seven people, including a child, died when the SUV they were travelling in rolled down a gorge in Ghaziabad’s Vijay Nagar area on Friday night, IANS reported. Twelve people were in the car, and five are said to be in critical condition.
Survivors told NDTV the driver had parked the car next to a gorge near National Highway 24. It rolled down the sloped road after a child, who was sitting in the front seat, accidentally disengaged the hand brake. It is not known if the child is the minor who died.
The accident took place when a person called Om Prakash Rastogi and 11 others were on their way to attend his son’s wedding in Ghaziabad district. Rastogi was among those killed in the freak accident.
“Around 8:30 pm, these people were coming from Bareilly,” said eyewitness Satish Kumar. “The baraat was to come to my place. Chaos ensued as the car fell into the gorge…I jumped in the water to help them when I saw some women screaming for help.”
The police reached the spot around 10:30 pm. An officer said a case has been filed against the driver, who is absconding.
